Transportation Issues

Transportation is not just roads, buses and trails. Our transportation system affects the quality of our lives in many ways beyond the time we spend commuting. The efficiency of the local and regional transportation network affects many aspects of our lives.

The Transportation issue in our region can be solved if we promote positive solutions and good projects, while stopping the bad projects -- particularly proposed outer beltways, which will accelerate suburban sprawl and renew the decline of our Nation's Capital and inner suburbs. Good transportation projects should help to move people, not just cars. Good land use decisions should encourage efficient transportation patterns, such as transit-oriented development, pedestrian and bike friendly design, and mixed use development. Providing people with transportation choices, including a variety of transit systems such as bus, rail, and metro, is also crucial. Such beneficial elements of transportation are all a part of a regional and local smart growth vision for communities.
