2007 Active Compassion Conference
Going Beyond Bias

The purpose of this year’s Active Compassion Conference was to explore bias, racism and diversity.  The weekend was led by Acharya Gaylon Ferguson and Acharya Arawana Hayashi, who employed meditation, analytical contemplation, body awareness, talking circles, and deep listening practices to infuse clarity and gentleness into a discussion that is often accompanied by a great deal of fear, aggression and pain.

About the September 1-2, 2007 Baltimore Street Retreat

"When we go to bear witness to life on the streets, we're offering ourselves. Not blankets, not food, not clothes, just ourselves." - Bernie Glassman, Bearing Witness

Street Retreat is a powerful practice of not-knowing and bearing witness, where the unpredictable life on the streets is the main teacher. It is a time of raw intimacy, a plunge into a side of life we look at only rarely. We go on the streets with no money and just the clothes on our back. We eat in soup kitchens and beg for money or food at times when soup kitchens are not open. We sleep outdoors or in abandoned housing, though not in shelters since there are not enough beds. We don't say we're homeless; we're simply living on the streets for several days, relying on the generosity of the streets to take care of us. While at times we break up into smaller groups, we come together several times a day to share our experiences in a council practice. We also spend our nights together.

We raise the funds to do the retreat. The fee for the retreat is $108. Amount of money raised varies from retreat to retreat. All money is donated. Two-third to homeless organizations and one-third to Active Compassion to support its social action mission.

The retreat is limited to 10 participants on a first come, first serve basis. The retreat will begin in Downtown Baltimore at 10 am on September 1st and end at 10 am on the 2nd. Stephen Clarke, Buddhist Teacher and Facilitator of Active Compassion, will be leading the retreat. He has lead Street Retreats internationally and has worked on issues of homelessness, substance abuse and mental health in the US and Canada.
